School Board Position Open

January 30, 2018

The South Eastern School District Board of Directors (aka School Board), has an open position after Board Member Michael McKenna resigned.

Anyone above the age of eighteen, who has lived in the school district for at least one year, and currently resides in region two of the district is eligible to apply. Region two includes: Fawn Grove Borough, Fawn Township, and parts of Airville and Felton.

Individuals who are interested in applying for the board position must submit a letter of interest, as well as a resume to the Secretary to the Superintendent Melissa Porrovecchio by 4:00 p.m. on January 31, in order to be considered for the position.

Public interviews will take place at the Committee of the Whole meeting on February 1 for all who seek the position.

So why should the students body care about an open board position?

The board oversees all of the main functions of the district. They have the ultimate authority on things ranging from the hiring of teachers to the approval of spending on things like homecoming.

Other examples of what the board does in a district include: approval of the creation of new clubs or activities, creation/approval of the school calendar, even approval of where bus stops will exist.

Basically, all facets of school day to day functions are overseen, monitored, and approved through the board.

The School Board operates on a voting system, where each member is given only one vote. All decisions are determined by majority vote, either yes or no.

If students would like to see certain changes made within the school or district, they should encourage individuals who they feel would make those changes to apply for the School Director position.

These people could be family members or friends who meet the requirements outlined above. Board members have the ability to shape school policy, so students should encourage like-minded people to apply for the position.

Politics at the local level are just as important as politics at the state or federal level. The individuals at the local level have the ability to enact change that can affect an individual’s day to day life just as much (if not more) than someone at the federal level does.
