Homecoming Back To “Normal”

November 9, 2022

For the first time in three years, the Homecoming dance was back to “normal” and students on the whole loved the event.

This year’s homecoming was planned with the help of Student Council advisors Rachel Bontoyan, and Joyce Marburger, and Student Council members. It occurred on  October 15 in the gym and cafeteria.

While students expect the Homecoming every fall, advisors notified students via e-mail and KRAM about ticket deadlines, guest forms, behavior forms, as well as the cost of the event–which was $25 per ticket.

The recent dance had the most ticket sales in the past three years with about 40 more tickets sold. There were 530 tickets sold in total.

Not only was this the most popular dance based on ticket sales, but students also gave it the best rating so far. “I almost forgot it was a gym,” said senior Trinity Haller.

Every student interviewed credited the student council for the amazing decorations and lights but a local company by the name of “Baker Event Company” decorated and provided a disc jockey (DJ).

As opposed to student opinions in previous years, many enjoyed the music. “The music gave 2010 vibes but in a good way,” said senior Brooklyn Arrington

The decorations included a long red carpet that passed through the cafeteria and gym, a photo booth, and a tapestry-like curtain with floor lights facing towards it with individual letters spelling out homecoming.

“This was the most fun I’ve had at any school dance. I’m glad I stayed for more than an hour because I left every other after 30 minutes. I loved the setup, it was amazing and gorgeous,” said tennis Captain Mackenzie Weaver.

Although students had great reviews, homecoming still faced some mixed feelings.

The food options included snacks, such as pretzels, water, cookies, nachos, chips, and lemonade.

Some students found the food wasn’t up to par. “The lemonade tasted nasty,” said junior Aiyanah Terry.

Others, like senior Cody Sherwood, thought the food was the best it’s been.

In addition to some criticism, students thought 15 minutes was a short window of time to require students to be in line and checked in for the dance, though no one seemed upset about the wand searches put into effect this year.

Despite criticisms, students, overall, enjoyed the dance.

The 2020 homecoming didn’t happen because we were still recovering from Covid, and the following years were a bust.

Due to continued covid precautions, the 2021 homecoming was located on the football field. It rained beforehand, so it was cloudy, wet, and cold.

In addition, because it was in such a large space, it felt like fewer people attended and there was less interaction according to seniors who attended last year.
