New Floors, Galore!

If you have not noticed yet, over the summer, the school installed new floors in the hallway on the first floor and in the gymnasium.

Continental Flooring replaced the hallway floor because there were gaps in the tiles, which can become a tripping hazard. In addition, the space between the tiles is nearly impossible to clean, so it could have become a hygiene issue, according to Brian McCleary, the head of buildings and grounds.

After replacing the tile, the company also coated it with epoxy to make it more durable for sports teams that workout after school.

Epoxy is actually a heavy duty floor coating that makes the floor much more durable than the previous tile that developed gaps.

“The hallway floor is more durable, so it’s better for working out,” said Athletic director Gary McChalicher.

The gym floor was redone simply because it was old and dirty.

The floor in the gym is actually the same floor, it was just sanded down and

coated with a fresh layer of polyurethane to clean it up.

Polyurethane is the coating on the gym floor, and it is used to brighten up the gym floor and cushion athletes’ falls. It also is easy to level, or keep the floor perfectly even, which is important for athletes.

The renovated gym floor has been modified to help with existing classes within the school.

Gym teacher Laura Gilkey said, “ I love the new gym floor.  I think it brightens up the gym.  The lines are easy to see and I believe it makes the gym look great. They have added agility lines and ladders to the court.  This will allow us to maximize the space for Speed, Agility, and Quickness as well as for Phys. Ed warm-ups.”

The refurbishments took longer than anticipated due to unexpected mistakes with the contractor’s work.

Continental Flooring began the renovations on July 12 and finished by July 3.

The new floor replacement originally started in the summer of 2017, but the district was not content with the finished job in the hallway, so the company replaced it this summer according to Head of Buildings and Grounds Brian McCleary.
