Girls Varsity Basketball Wins Division
February 15, 2019
The Varsity Girls Basketball team took the York-Adams Interscholastic Athletic Association (Y.A.I.A.A.) Division II title with their win over Gettysburg in overtime on February 2.
As per tradition, the Rams cut down the net after their win over West York, the final home game of the season.
With a final regular season record of 20-2, the Rams played Spring Grove on February 8 in the Y.A.I.A.A. county quarterfinals and lost 47-38. Even with the loss in the county playoffs, the Rams are still set to play in Districts on February 22.
Looking back at the regular season, the Rams started the season strong with seven wins in a row. In their first meeting with Susquehannock, the Rams won 53-42 and had four players with double figures in scoring.
In their second meeting with Susquehannock, the Warriors handed the Rams their first loss of the season.
Senior Megan Halzcuk said, “Our teamwork on the court is the thing that really makes us successful. We need to keep putting in the work, because it’s not going to get any easier.”
However, the Rams did not let that loss bring them down as they won eight in a row after their first loss of the season. In fact, the Rams won eight in a row after that loss including a 32-point victory over Carlisle.
In addition, the Rams beat Northeastern by 20 and York Suburban by 23 in that eight game winning streak.
The Rams’ second loss of the season came at the hands of Pequea Valley. While the team lost, they kept it close and only lost by six points.
Thereafter, the Rams finished the regular season on a five game winning streak that included some big victories. In the final regular season meeting between the Rams and Susquehannock, the Rams blew out the Warriors 53-16.
Also, the overtime win at Gettysburg came in the duration of that five game winning streak to end the regular season. And then, the Rams got a win over West York on senior night to finish the regular season.
Looking back at how the team has improved since the start of the year, Halzcuk said, “We improved a lot. We became more focused and driven throughout the season because we saw the results we were getting.”
