Who Will Be MVP in the NFL?
February 5, 2021
The NFL has many MVP caliber players among the 32 teams each with 53 players on their roster. But the three players that stick out to me are: Patrick Mahomes the starting Quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs, Aaron Rodgers the starting Quarterback for the Green Bay Packers and Derrick Henry the starting running back for the Tennessee Titans.
The first candidate and a fan favorite I will look at is Mahomes. Once again, as expected from the reigning Superbowl champion quarterback, he had a great season leading the Chiefs to a 14-2 record earning them the number one seed in the AFC, which also earned the Chiefs a first round bye for the playoffs.
His stats include a 66 completion percentage, 4,470 yards passing, 38 passing touchdowns, 6 interceptions, and a passer rating of 108.2. This is a great season for a quarterback, and Mahomes is one of the most exciting players in the NFL and will be a Hall of Famer by the end of his career.
The second candidate is Rodgers. This has been one of Rodgers best seasons in his career; he has led the Packers to a 13-3 record earning them the number one seed in the NFC, which also gave the Packers a first round bye week for the playoffs.
Rodgers’ statistics this season include a 70.7 completion percentage, 4,299 passing yards, 48 passing touchdowns, 5 interceptions, and a passer rating of 121.5. This is obviously one of the best quarterback performances in the 2020 regular season, which is why Rodgers is a top candidate for the MVP award.
The third and final candidate, which interestingly is not a quarterback but rather a running back, is Henry; he was the number one rusher in the league this year. He helped lead the Titans to a 11-5 record, which had them leading their division. Henry had a standout season that is expected when he is also known as “King Henry”.
His statistics include 378 carries for 2,027 rushing yards, which had him average 5.4 yards per carry along with 17 rushing touchdowns. The big standout of his great season is the 2,027 yards rushing. Those 2,027 yards had Henry join the legendary 2k club, which includes Barry Sanders , Adrian Peterson, Eric Dickerson and even more hall of famers.
One other candidate no one realizes had a great season is Deshaun Watson the starting quarterback for the Houston Texans. He actually led the league in passing yardage.
His statistics included a 70.2 completion percentage along with 4,823 passing yards, 33 passing touchdowns, 7 interceptions, and a passer rating of 112.4. His season definitely went under the radar due to the fact the Houston Texans were a 4-12 football team.
My choice for the Most Valuable Player in the NFL’s 2020 season is Rodgers. Firstly, he has one of the best passer ratings in the NFL this year. Secondly, he threw only 5 interceptions through a 16 game season along with 48 passing touchdowns.
Lastly, he led his team to a 13-3 record, which is a tough feat in the NFL. Some may say Mahomes should win the MVP award, but at the end of the day, he had a lot more help– including the fastest player in the NFL and one of the best tight ends in recent history.
When all is said and done, Rodgers deserves the MVP award due to the fact that he has just had a better season than Mahomes. He beat him in every category except passing yardage, which was not surprising due to the fact that Mahomes has one of the best receiving corps in the league.
