The art department honors a different artist each month through the recognition of Artist of the Month. For October, it was Hattie Denny.

Mostly, when teachers are looking for a student of the month (SOM) they look for seniors with a good body of work and ideally make artwork out of class.

Denny said, “Being the student of the month makes me want to create new and better pieces, it inspires me to go further.

She also talked about her inspiration and experience in making art.

“Many of my ideas stem from inspiration from my mom’s pieces. I like to ‘remix’ her pieces and make them my own, that way I can keep a part of her with me,” Denny said.

When it comes to a medium, Denny prefers not to stick with any one. Instead, she likes to experiment with many forms such as expressionism, symbolism, and surrealism.

For me, art is trial and error, I typically add or take away from my pieces until it becomes what I want,” Denny said.

While Denny enjoys art she does not plan to pursue a career in it. She said she will very likely create it on the side and sell it as a hobby; this way she can make sure her creative work never feels like a job or burden.

Art teacher Alex Bastian believes it is important to have a SOM “I think it is good to have for the students, the art department, and other students, to recognize and showcase the work which has earned the honor and has a strong interest in art. It allows people to see what’s possible when someone works hard at their own work.”

Each month, the art department announces the new SOM on the second Tuesday. The student is honored on the morning announcements and gets their work displayed in the hallway in front of the office entrance.

The previous winners were Autumn Beall, who won September SOM.
