This generation has gotten more anti-social over many years, with one of the main reasons being video games. Video games have impacted so many youths and teens for the worse. For example, a few decades ago, teens used to go out with friends and do a lot of fun stuff that is unheard of today. Teens would play hide and seek, participate in sports, and have cookouts. Now, teens sit inside all day, playing on consoles like PlayStation and Xbox with people online, not interacting with them physically. This generation has been developing increasingly worse anti-social habits.
In past decades, technology was less advanced than now, considering the most significant entertainment pieces were Nintendo products, like GameBoy and VCRs. This technology brought teens much joy, but there was also joy in just being with friends. If teens wanted to play together, they would go to another person’s house rather than meet online. Teens loved to be outside, being able to do so much due to the values and attitudes of the time. Now it seems more restrictive and sometimes dangerous to be outside alone or even with friends.
As a personal anecdote, when my parents were little, my dad would go out with his brothers and pretend they were building forts, whereas my mom would go to a park nearby or to Ocean City, Maryland, in the summer. They had so much fun and only played video games when they were not with friends. Besides that, technology was less advanced, ensuring that their creativity was always fully displayed.
In this current generation, technology has changed in many ways, considering the advancement over the past 20 years. So much has been created, like Apple and Android phones, Xbox, PlayStation, and more. With all current forms of online entertainment, teens no longer interact face-to-face, considering they can just text or call in/during the game. With all this new technology coming out, everyone, not just teenagers, has forgotten the joy of being outside and creating unforgettable memories with their friends.
This generation has been rotting for many more reasons besides those stated above. The advancement of technology is one of the reasons why this generation is how it is now. So many people have forgotten what an actual childhood is like, with no one going outside anymore. I honestly believe the ‘80s and ‘90s were probably the best times to experience childhood. Technology didn’t rot kids’ minds in the past the way it does today, and technology should be limited so teens can enjoy youth. If the generation keeps going on in this manner throughout time, everyone will forget the joy of being a child.
