The Riddler: Secrets in the Dark is a Blue Ribbon Content produced Spotify podcast and a spin-off of Batman Unburied. The podcast displays an interesting spin on the Riddler and his dynamics with the other DC characters. In it, we follow the Riddler as he attempts to figure out why his fellow rogues are being killed and who’s causing it.
The Riddler: Secrets in the Dark gives a new look at the supervillain and how he works. In this podcast, the Riddler is implied to have Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). The Riddler feels the compulsion to figure things out, be smarter than those around him, speak in riddles; he constantly has to do seemingly odd things because of his compulsion. In the podcast, he knows early that he is going to be the last killed, yet he refuses to leave. The Riddler stays in Gotham to figure out why rogues are being killed and why he’s going to be the last killed.
The podcast also has very interesting dynamics between the Riddler and those around him. We get to see how the Riddler interacts with Killer Croc and how they bond, at the very end we even get to see them sharing a cell at Arkham, bonding over a riddle. The Riddler also has an interesting bond with Batman, the two care greatly for each other, having each saved each other throughout the podcast.
During the podcast, we get to meet the Riddler’s sister and see their history together. We get to learn that growing up his sister was protective of him, keeping him safe from their abusive parents and bullies from school. After the Riddler becomes a young adult and starts getting more aggressive, his villain-like tendencies start to come through more, causing them to grow apart. The breaking point for their relationship being the Riddlers first kill. Even with their strained relationship, it’s obvious throughout the story that they still care for each other.
The Riddler: Secrets in the Dark is a very enjoyable story and is easy to access due to it being free and in audio form. This podcast posed fun characterization for every character, I found myself loving every interaction and dynamic. It’s very fun to try and figure out the mystery of who the killer is, and why they’re doing this.
