Look up in the sky! It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s a new Superman movie coming in 2025! Superman (previously titled Superman: Legacy), is a movie coming from DC Studios on July 11th, 2025. Written and directed by James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy, The Suicide Squad), Superman promises to be a fresh new take on the Champion of the Oppressed while still paying respects to everything that came before it.
As of February 29th, the canonical birthday for the man of steel, Gunn announced Superman has started its principal photography, sharing the information with a logo reveal of the Superman suit (as shown above). This means the film is now in full swing and shooting its scenes. Let’s go over everything we know about the film so far.
According to Gunn on threads, the official description of Superman reads, “Superman embarks on a journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent.” The new man of steel is played by David Corenswet, who’s been in movies such as Pearl and Hollywood. Only recently posting the logo on his Instagram, he’s been very quiet about his take on the role. However, we’ve seen through pictures leaked on social media that he’s been putting in the effort behind the scenes and working out for that Superman build.
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel herself, Rachel Brosnahan, has been cast as Lois Lane, investigative journalist for the Daily Planet. Other than The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Brosnahan has worked on shows such as House of Cards and The Blacklist. She’s been very open about her excitement for the role, jokingly stating in an interview from Entertainment Weekly that she’s “stalking” many journalists to get more into the part. Brosnahan has said to expect Lane to be the love interest for Clark who’s far from a damsel in distress and puts the pages of the comics onto the big screen. Other members of the Daily Planet like photographer Jimmy Olsen (Skyler Gisondo) and boss of the paper Perry White (Wendell Pierce) are also confirmed to be in the film.
Billionaire CEO of an international conglomerate, evil scientist, and hater of aliens Lex Luthor will be played by none other than Nicholas Hoult. Known mainly as Beast in the X-Men films and Nux in Mad Max: Fury Road, Hoult will be bringing a new face to Superman’s greatest foe. Recently on Michael Rosenbaum’s (Lex from Smallville) podcast, his shaved head look confirmed he’s starting to transform into the iconic villain. They have not said much about what we are to expect, however Rosenbaum’s Lex from Smallville is Hoult’s personal favorite adaptation of the character. Audiences were not happy with the previous Lex Luthor on the big screen (Jesse Eisenburg in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice), so there is a lot of pressure to get it right this time. Lex’s assistants Otis (Terence Rosemore) and Eve Teschmacher (Sara Sapiro) will be making an appearance in this film as well, which calls back to the 1978 classic.
Other characters in the DC Universe confirmed for Superman are the superheroes Hawkgirl played by Isabela Merced, Green Lantern (Guy Gardner) played by Nathan Fillion, Metamorpho played by Anthony Carrigan, Mister Terrific played by Edi Gathegi, and Supergirl played by House of the Dragon star Milly Alcock. Notable antiheroes Maxwell Lord (Sean Gunn) who looks to be less of a villain like his take in WW1984, and The Engineer (Maria Gariela de Faria) who appears to be a villain will both be in the film.
There are many speculations from fans as to what this film would be; though this is the start of Gunn’s new DCU, he has stated on Threads this is not an origin film, and Superman will already be into his career when the movie begins. However, fans will not have to wait long for updates, considering they are currently actively filming in places like Norway and Atlanta.
What’s clear is Superman will be a film for comics and movie fans alike.
