Many students complain about having to start school early in the day, in hopes they could sleep in for a few extra hours. However, due to the discipline it provides, an early school day prepares students for their futures.
Many full-time jobs require employees to start working early in the morning, typically around 8-9 a.m. Students who are attending college also will have to attend classes that may start in the early morning hours.
To prepare students for work and college after they graduate, it is important they learn to discipline themselves before they graduate. The easiest way to do this is by having students wake up early for school. This teaches students that even though it is not pleasant, discipline is necessary in order to achieve what is expected.
In addition to preparation for students’ futures, early school days allow students to leave the building earlier in the afternoon. For many students, weekday evenings are packed full with
activities. Many high school students have jobs, are involved in sports, or even other activities involving church or instrument practices. When students are released from school earlier in the day, it allows them to have more time for these activities in the evenings.
Further, most students have homework in the evenings they need to complete. If students are released late, involved in extracurriculars and have homework, they would not have much time to complete it. This would cause students to work on homework late into the night, therefore getting less sleep for classes the next day.
Not only students, but teachers also need time in the evenings to spend with their families. If students are let out later in the day, teachers would have less time to enjoy with their partners and children, as well as less time to prepare lesson plans. If students are released early, this allows teachers to prepare lessons after students go home, while still having enough time with their families and other activities they may be involved in.
Some may say that starting school later in the day allows students to focus better due to the increased amount of sleep; however, this may be incorrect. According to an article by Education World, people who wake up early have better brain function, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
To ensure students are prepared for their futures and give them and their teachers enough time for evening activities, schools should continue to start school early in the day.
