In school, many teachers do not encourage listening to music and may prohibit it. But, there are many benefits to listening to music, such as helping people focus and getting their work done.
Many schools have planned on banning headphones in school and many already have. Schools have implemented disciplinary consequences if students wear headphones in class. But, some teachers think differently about this and have their own feelings on it.
Kennard-Dale High School English teacher Issac Latshaw was interviewed on his opinion. One of the
questions he got asked was, “Do you find that music helps people focus? If so, why do you think that?”
Latshaw’s answer was maybe, but he said it depends on the student. He also thinks what is being played depends on whether it will help him focus or not.
Sophomore at Kennard-Dale High School, Mia Lopez was also asked the same question. She stated, “Yes, I feel as if it calms the brain down and will help get work done.” Many people could agree with this.
Lopez then got asked a follow-up question based on her answer. The question stated, “What type of music do you think helps the best? And why?” Her answer was calm music. She also talked about how it will give a background noise, so it’s not dead silence. But, Lopez did inform what type of music it is that can overstimulate people from being too loud, which was rock/heavy metal.
The specific question made for only teachers was, “Do you find that more work gets done when music is playing?” The answer Latshaw gave was very particular. He said it depends on the person, but gave a “No” at the start.
The question for just students at Kennard-Dale was, “Does a silent classroom feel productive to you, or is it just stressful and awkward because of the silence?” Mia gave points throughout the interview. She feels as if a silent classroom can be productive for her. She also talks about how it could be awkward at times, but only if people decide to make it like that.
Overall, looking through the answers from the interview, it seems as if music shouldn’t be banned from schools and it could potentially help students. Lopez and Latshaw stated a good point of view that music can benefit the learning experience of the students.
